Skijoring Lessons

Learn to skijor with your dog! 

Intro to Skijoring

Did you know we now offer the only comprehensive introduction to dog skijoring course in Calgary? 

Come and find out what everyone loves so much about the sport! Over the years we've had so many questions about how to get started, but the vast majority of people are worried that their dog won't listen, will chase squirrels, and more. The good news is - we are here to help!

Learn how to train your dog to skijor from the perspective of a professional reinforcement-based dog trainer. If you are interested in getting started, this beginner-friendly series is for you! 

In this 2-hour in person session you will learn about gear & safety, what types of skis to use, where you can skijor in & around Calgary, essential groundwork, how to teach your dog to pull, directional cues & emergency cues, how to counterbalance and more. Register for an in person session and receive the webinar for free! 

1 session total - 2 hours per session (workshop format)

Maximum 4 students per session

$75 (GST included)

Location: North/South Glenmore Park, grooming dependent

 

(Note that if temperatures drop below -15, we will move to an indoor facility located at 4116 Macleod Trail SE)

Requirements: As with any group class, rabies and DA2PP vaccines are required. Maximum 4 dogs per session.

Recommended gear for the first session includes warm clothing that you can move in (layers), high and medium value treats (in a fanny pack or accessible location), harness with back clip, canicross belt, bungee leash, hiking boots or winter shoes (for groundwork) - we have gear available to borrow for the session - please let us know in advance if you need anything!  Cross country skis are not required for the first session as 85% of the content will be discussions and groundwork however you can bring skis if you feel comfortable enough to try putting everything together at the end of class.

*Note that while anyone is welcome to attend, it is recommended that you have basic cross country ski skills (skate or classic) before skijoring with your dog - we are not ski instructors and for safety reasons, you should be able to manage basic movements before adding in a dog. We focus on the dog training aspect of the sport - if you would like to learn how to ski as well, contact us for recommendations!* 

Advanced Skijoring

Did you know we now offer the only comprehensive introduction to dog skijoring course in Calgary? 

Now that you've practiced the 6 essential cues, are comfortable using your gear, come and build on the skijoring skills you've learned and practiced with your dog! 
 

Work on putting it all together with your skis on! Bring your gear, practice the groundwork with distraction and additional drills, learn how to solidify your cues, fade out treat rewards, increase drive to pull, and more! Our webinar and Intro to Skijoring are great prerequisites that goes over all of the required gear, safety, and what to bring. If you have not taken any of our courses but feel like your ski skills and your dog's cues are ready for the advanced class, please contact us to ensure it's a fit before registering.

1 session total - 1.5 hours per session (workshop format)

Maximum 4 students per session

$60 (GST included)

(Note that as this advanced session is required to be outdoors, if temperatures drop below -20 we may postpone or move the lesson - in which case students will be contacted in advance. If the temperatures are -20 or above, the class will continue and we may extend the lesson to take breaks to warm up in cars as needed.)

Required gear for the advanced session includes warm clothing that you can move in (layers), high and medium value treats (in a fanny pack or accessible location), harness with back clip, canicross belt, bungee leash, hiking boots or winter shoes (for groundwork), cross country ski setup (skis/boots/poles - skate or classic, rentals are fine).

Recommended, but not required: X-back harness, dog booties, helmet, cross country ski pants or waterproof layer

Private Lessons

Private lessons also available - contact us for more information and to book. These are an option if your dog may struggle with a group class setting.
